Six years ago, Elora Hardy started building sustainable bamboo homes in Indonesia. She left her successful career — and her whole life — behind in New York, assembled a team of enthusiasts, and went to Bali to lead a small architectural and environmental revolution there.
Elora was inspired by her father, who believed bamboo to be one of the most promising building materials. ’When I first saw these (bamboo) structures under construction about six years ago, I just thought, this makes perfect sense...Why hasn’t this happened sooner, and what can we do with it next?’, explains the architect.

Bamboo has the compressive force of concrete, the strength-to-weight ratio of steel, and is one of the fastest growing plants out there. The only downside is that bamboo can become infested with insects, but Elora uses boron to treat her building materials, making them indigestible.
