Luke Nuttall, only seven years old, was sound asleep when his trusty diabetic alert dog, Jedi, awoke his mother to let her know something was very wrong.
Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes since the age of two, Luke Nuttall is under constant supervision of his black Labrador, Jedi. The pup has been trained as a diabetic alert dog since he was 11 weeks old, and his help was instrumental in saving Luke’s life recently.
In the middle of the night, Jedi awoke Dorrie Nuttall, Luke’s mother, by laying on top of her until she awoke. She was confused because there were no warning signs, but instead checked her son’s glucose level to be sure. It read only 57 mg/dl, according to CBS News, which is a dangerously low level.
Jedi, with his training, was able to sense that his best friend Luke’s blood sugar was extremely low by smell. Diabetes is an often scary disease, and as Dorrie told CBS News, “A lot of kids die almost at diagnosis. People don’t know the warning signs.”
Dorrie took a photo and shared it to the Facebook page she devoted to documenting her tiny son’s battle with the disease, Saving Luke. She made sure to let the public know that she took a photo of the night’s low-level reading after she administered an emergency glucose tab to raise his levels.
Luke’s companion, who travels with him to school, the doctor, and everywhere else, saved his life that night. The true friendship between the pair is unmistakable and adorable.
