It’s no easy task to build a long-lasting and happy marriage: it takes a lot of courage, patience and love. Is it possible to share all your life with one person and still be in love with each other by the end? Is it really impossible? Nicholas and Rafaela Ordaz claim that only romance and love reign within their family. This sweet couple from California, USA, has recently celebrated an incredible 82 years of marriage together. Nicholas recently turned 102, and his beloved Rafaela turned 100 in October, 2015.
’’Their parents lived to be 112 and 108, and they were also happily married. Divorce isn’t really something our family has experienced. Nurturing those relationships is a huge part of our culture,’’ says Leticia Ordaz (39), one of the couple’s many grandchildren.
Five generations have gather together to celebrate this happy occasion, but despite all the fuss around them and all the attention given to them, their eyes were on each other all the time.
’’They’re still so in love. It’s really quite remarkable,’’ says Ordaz. ’’In every picture, they’re holding hands or trying to kiss each other. At one point, my grandfather pulled her aside and said, ’Rafaela, let’s go to the bedroom now.’ Of course we all heard and started howling!
«But he didn’t even blush. He said that he had married the most beautiful woman in the world, and that her body was just as beautiful to him now as it was when they were first together.’’
Of course, such a successful long-term relationship as this one has required much more than just passion over the years.
The couple has shared some pearls of their wisdom: they say that the key to a happy marriage is mutual respect and ’’not sweating over the small stuff.’’
’’They take care of each other,’’ says Leticia. ’’At the party, he kept looking around to see if she had gotten any cake yet. She has diabetes — she can’t really have cake! But he wanted them to experience it together.’’
Leticia, having just celebrated her own ten-year anniversary with her husband, says that her grandparents taught her a lot about marriage.
In view of all their years spent together, the happy marriage of Nicholas and Rafaela Ordaz is arguably a symbol of true happiness and longevity. ’’Now that they’re getting older, their memories aren’t as sharp,’’ their granddaughter says. ’’They forget everyone else’s names, although they always remember each other.»
